COVID-19 Update: India jump to 1.3 lakh with highest number of 6,767 new cases

COVID-19 Update: India on Sunday saw the highest single-day increase of 6,767 new COVID-19 cases as the total number of cases reached 1,31,868. There are 73,560 active cases and a total of 54,440 people have been cured of coronavirus, while 3,867 patients have died. Health Ministry said.

Maharashtra continued to be the worst-hit state with 47,190 cases, 1,577 people deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 15,512 cases and 103 deaths while Gujarat is at the third spot with 13,664 cases and 829 deaths. Delhi has so far reported 12,910 cases with 231 deaths.

PM CARES Fund Trust has decided to allocate ₹100 crores for support to coronavirus vaccine development efforts. The Indian government and private firms have stepped up efforts to develop a vaccine to halt the spread of COVID-19. The Department of Biotechnology has been made a central coordination agency to identify pathways for vaccine development.

COVID-19 strain was isolated and characterized at the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Virology, Pune, and the vaccine candidate has been transferred to Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) to develop a fully indigenous vaccine for COVID-19. The WHO has listed Serum Institute of India, Zydus Cadila, Indian Immunologicals Limited and Bharat Biotech from India among the firms involved in developing a vaccine. However, China and the US are quite ahead in vaccine development.

Covid-19 update globally 344,041 people have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, while some 5.4 million infections have been confirmed in at least 188 countries and territories. Over 2.2 million people have recovered to date. The US remains the most affected country in the world with 98,683 deaths from 1,666,828 cases, followed by UK 36,675 deaths from 257,154 cases, Brazil 32,735 deaths from 229,327 cases, Spain 28,678 deaths from 282,370 cases.
