Wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui have killed at least 36 people, burned hundreds of houses, and driven thousands of residents and visitors from their homes.

According to Maui County, the death toll went up from six to 36 on Wednesday night. and many more people are getting burn and smoke inhalation treatments.

As firefighters battle to put out the fires, about 14,000 households are still without electricity, there is a major search and rescue activity underway, but some people are still missing.

Mason Jarvi, a native of Lahaina who was able to flee from the wildfire said the current incident was the worst I've ever experienced. Lahaina is completely burned to the ground.

Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii Sylvia Luke, who had flown over the area with the Coast Guard said that several homes and businesses had been destroyed.

It seems as though the entire town had burned to the ground, the famous tourist destination and economic powerhouse in Lahaina, has been particularly hard-hit. And we're heartbroken to witness this unfold in front of our eyes, Luke added.
